PROMPT #1: Philosophy (the pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self discipline) and its practical applications to classrooms has been ongoing for more than 2,000 years. A person's philosophy of education is usually a set of beliefs that relate to who, what, how, and why people in society should be educated. Think about your philosophy of education and write your ideas below this prompt.
(It can be as long or as short as you desire) Remember to SAVE when you are done, or every so often. To add more click the "Edit This Page" button at the top and click your cursor where you would like to type. START HERE: I believe that everyone should be taught that way you can be successful in your future. Everyone should be taught things that will be used in their life. Math and computer skills are important. Kids should be taught in smaller classroom of 10-15 people so that the teacher can get around to more people. There should be more group work to develop social skills. The teacher should help teach what the kids don't know. Teacher should use short lectures, allow independent work, and also group work.
PROMPT #2: Now that you have viewed the PowerPoint (found on the HOME page) and recorded some notes, explain which philosopher(s) you most agree with and why (feel free to give examples and/or experiences.)
START HERE: Most agree with Dewey because he believed that reality can change and that education IS life. You can't really survive without education. Agree that schools should be like small communities (microcosms) because it would prepare you for life better.
Also agree a lot with Spencer: The more you learn the better off you'll be. Kids should be doing fun and interesting activities to keep them involved in learning. Things you learn in school should directly relate to what you will need in real life.
PROMPT #3: Please explain which philosopher(s) you most disagree with and why (feel free to give examples and/or experiences.)
START HERE: Disagreed with Rousseau. I don't agree that knowledge reaches the mind through the senses. I think that you already have the knowledge, and it just needs to be uncovered (agreement with Socrates). Thought that Sartre was very wacko. Disagree that the world is full of ignorant people. Also that man is only what he makes of himself, because I believe that God works with you to create who you are.
PROMPT #4: Do you think having a philosophy of education is important for teachers these days, and if so should they share it with others (ie. students, parents, community)? Please explain your answer.
START HERE: Yes, teacher should have an educational philosophy. It helps them develop their teaching style and how they want to teach. They should share it with the parents, community, and students. That way they will know why the teacher is teaching the way he/she is. There will be more understanding from everyone involved. None of my teachers ever shared their philosophy, and I couldn't understand why some of them taught the way they did, like reading out of the book a lot. I can understand using the book a little bit, but not all the time.
